So, I’ve been posting over on the Talis Source Blog, my work blog, for a while and have eventually caved in.

Not only have I finally bit the bullet and set up this blog, the BT Broadband Hub has been installed in my “stop gap before we buy a house next month” flat that we’ve been living in for the past year. Yep, sure have. And it’s rubbish.

I was tricked I tell you, tricked. The CD that lay ever so innocently, next to my new home hub my gateway to ALL the world’s information, looked so innocent. The last dribbles of caution towards this questionable CD evaporated once I was reassured by a pretty blue “open me first” badge on the CD case. I could almost feel the water lapping at my board while I was surfing the net, I was that close. If only my trust in my new package and the bright white gleaming lump of technical goodness ended there. It didn’t.

Oh how I wish I hadn’t opened that CD case with the blue badge, then I wouldn’t of seen the quick start guide. I wouldn’t of then read the glossy pamphlet , powered the hub up, waited an hour while this white pillar of joy flashed expectantly at me. Then I most certainly wouldn’t of installed the CD “to connect your computer to the hub”. Little did I know. But how was I to know, that software that came from the gods at BT and packaged with my shinny new bit of kit could have me weeping on my kitchen floor for a solid 2 hour stint. Followed by some fairly “fruity” language cursing the moment that I noticed what I thought was a CD case.

It wasn’t a CD case, that much I can be sure. It was a swanky coffin , a swanky coffin that had my pride and joy, my HP laptop, in it‘s sites. It was at that moment while I was wiping the final few tears from my eyes, preparing to pay my final respects that the fear came back. I peered on helplessly as the software slowly, methodically and maliciously consumed my computer, replacing tools like the Windows Wireless Connection Manager with the useless mauve BT Wireless Connection Manager.

Faced with rotten traces of the BT software that nearly brought my computer to it’s knees and had left it severely handicapped, I was forced to reformat and reinstalled Windows. Emotionally drained I cried myself to sleep.

Although this morning in the cool light of day all was fine, brilliant in fact. Without installing the retched BT software, Internet browsing has never been better. You’ve been warned!
